Orthodontics - Teeth Straightening

Orthodontic Treatments for Stunningly Straight Smiles

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a dentistry branch that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of malocclusion – the incorrect alignment of the jaw and teeth when the mouth is closed. Orthodontic treatments in Hertfordshire aim to correct the bite and straighten the teeth, resulting in aesthetic and functional benefits.

At AJ Dental we offer Invisalign Clear Aligners and Dental Braces.

Conditions that can be improved by orthodontic treatments

  • Crossbite – when the mouth is closed, the upper teeth are tucked behind the lower teeth.
  • Overbite – the top front teeth are positioned in front of the lower teeth.
  • Underbite – when the mouth is closed, the lower teeth jut forward while the upper teeth are tucked behind.
  • Gapped teeth – spaces between teeth can make the smile look unattractive.
  • Open bite – when vertical space is created between the upper and lower front teeth while biting down.
  • Teeth crowding – when the mouth does not have enough room to accommodate all the teeth.

If you experience any of the conditions above, an orthodontic treatment can help improve your bite. The teeth straightening treatment will not only correct the way your teeth function but will also make your smile look more attractive.

What are the types of orthodontic appliances?

Fixed – As the name suggests, these are fixed in place while they work to correct the teeth alignment. Conventional dental braces are fixed orthodontic appliances that aim to straighten the teeth. Using wires, brackets, and bands, the fixed appliance puts pressure on the teeth, guiding them to move to the correct position. Fixed braces are usually worn for several months to a few years.

Removable – Removable orthodontic appliances can be taken out as needed, offering orthodontic improvement in a more convenient way compared to fixed braces. Aligners are placed onto the teeth, moving them gradually to achieve a straighter smile – with the added convenience of being removable whenever you need to, such as when eating or brushing. They straighten the teeth in a more discreet way as they are virtually invisible, unlike conventional braces that include visible metal parts.
